Oregon kids win big with Summer Reading

News & Events - Fri, 2014-11-14 11:51
Eight Oregon children now have a head start on saving for college, thanks to taking part in summer reading. Their names were randomly drawn as winners in Fizz Boom Save!, a statewide campaign designed to promote summer reading programs at public libraries around the state. The Oregon College Savings Plan sponsored the program in partnership with the Oregon State Library and Oregon Library Association.

Overall, the Oregon College Savings Plan awarded just over $11,000: each of the eight winners received a $529 Oregon College Savings Plan account, while 15 libraries — three from each Oregon congressional district — each received $500.

“The Oregon College Savings Plan believes it is fundamentally important to support summer reading programs for Oregon families,” said Michael Parker, executive director of the Oregon 529 College Savings Network. “Studies indicate that children who don't read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress. If we can get kids to enjoy reading now, we’re setting them up for greater success in school and in life.”

According to the Oregon State Library, nearly 201,325 children and teens participated in the summer reading programs offered at public libraries throughout Oregon, reading 149,898 books. More than 65,788 participants reached their reading goals and finished the summer reading program.

Exactly 5,594 children and teens participated in the Fizz Boom Save! summer reading program. The eight winners included:
• John Ficher of Myrtle Point, Grade 4, Flora M Laird Memorial Library
• Javon Hoffman of Beaverton, Grade 1, Hillsboro Public Library — Shute Park Branch Library
• Aspen Bailey of McMinnville, Grade 1, McMinnville Public Library
• Oliver DeMasi of Philomath, Grade 4, Corvallis-Benton County Public Library — Philomath Community Library
• Caleb Vaughan of Prineville, Grade 2, Crook County Library
• Sophia Marsh of Albany, Grade 5, Albany Main Library
• Rebekah Hewlett of Bend, Grade 2, Deschutes Public Library System — East Bend Library
• Isabella Johnston of Portland, Grade 3, Multnomah County Library — Hollywood Library

3M Cloud app crashing on some Apple devices after update

News & Events - Wed, 2014-11-12 15:39
If you use the 3M Cloud Library on an Apple device and recently updated the app this week, you may find the app crashes. 3M Cloud Library has traced the crashing to the syncing of bookmarks to the cloud. They are working hard to resolve the issue.

In the meantime, if you can’t read your book in the 3M Cloud app on an Apple device, here’s what to do:

  1. Use the 3M Cloud app in airplane mode – this will prevent the bookmarking syncing issue from crashing the app
  2. Uninstall and reinstall the app, but do not open the book that crashed the first time, unless you have your device in airplane mode.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience! Hopefully 3M Cloud will have this resolved soon.

WCCLS & Library Journal Index 2014

News & Events - Sun, 2014-11-09 11:47
Each year, Library Journal publishes an index of 'Star Libraries' within the United States.

Their rating system is developed from the annual data most public libraries in the United States, with the help of state library agencies, submit to the federal Institute for Museums & Library Services (IMLS).
Washington County Cooperative Library Services was recently lauded as a star library, earning 4 out of 5 stars! However, as a rather unique library cooperative, the data we are asked to submit to the Oregon State Library each year paints a slightly different picture when viewed within the context of single municipal libraries and centrally managed, regional library systems.

The data WCCLS reports includes only the county-level data: central support services costs and statistics, plus statistics from Washington County's West Slope Community Library and our Homebound Services program. As a result, the $5+ million annual WCCLS budget gets divided by West Slope’s relatively small service population. All of the data for WCCLS member libraries (with the exception of West Slope) are reported individually by each member library. So, to get the complete picture of Washington County, you need to add them all together.

Totals for WCCLS member libraries as a whole (fiscal year 2011-2012):
Service population:  536,370
Circulation per capita:  24.27
Library visits per capita:  7.91
Program attendance per capita:  0.43
Public internet use per capita:  1.16
Expenditure per capita: $64.38
Total expenditures: $34,530,588If the 12 WCCLS member libraries' data were viewed together as a single library system, we would still rank very well among other public library systems of similar size featured in the 2014 Library Journal index ($30+ million/year annual expenditures). In fact, WCCLS had better program attendance rates than Salt Lake County (UT), King County (WA), & Hennepin County (MN) Libraries; more library visits per capita than Multnomah County, Denver (CO), & St. Louis County (MO) Public Libraries; and higher circulation per captia than all other 2014 Star Libraries in this expenditure category, with the exception of Multnomah County Library.

Last but not least, we'd like to congratulate our colleagues at our cooperative's Garden Home Community Library, who received a 3-star rating within their own peer group ($200k - $399.9k/per year annual expenditures)! Nice work, Garden Home!

Congratulations also to our fellow Oregon Star Libraries: Lakeside Public Library (Coos County Library Service District), Port Orford Public Library, Eugene Public Library, and Multnomah County Library.
