Information about Kindle and Kindle apps from Amazon

Technical requirements

From Amazon's Public Library Books for Kindle FAQ page:

"You can read borrowed Kindle books on any generation Kindle device or all free Kindle apps, as well as in your web browser with Kindle Cloud Reader. Public library books require an active Wi-Fi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. Library books will not be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection. If you are trying to send a library book to a Kindle device and you do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, you can load your library book via USB instead."

If you are interested in using a Kindle reading app to get Library2Go books, visit this page to find technical requirements for the app on various devices.

Search for & download books

Visit the Library2Go website and click on Advanced Search:

Choose Kindle Book in the Format drop-down menu. To search for specific titles or authors, enter the information in the apppropriate fields. To browse, leave the search boxes blank and choose a subject to browse from the Subject drop-down menu. To see books available for download right now, check the box marked "Only show titles with copies available."

Once you've found a title, click on Add 2Go Cart next to the Kindle Book format:

Click on Proceed to Checkout:

Choose Washington County Cooperative Library Services from the list:

Enter your entire library card number without any spaces:

Choose how long you want the book for, and then click on Confirm Check Out:

Click on Get for Kindle. Another tab or window will open to the Amazon website.

Transfer the books to your Kindle reader or Kindle app

Please note that some Kindle titles are now restricted to transfer via USB only. For details on accessing these titles, click here.

Click on Get library book:

You will be prompted to log in to your Amazon account:

Choose which Kindle reader or Kindle app you want to send the book to:

Amazon will confirm that the book has been delivered:

Sync your Kindle device or Kindle app with your Amazon account, and the library book should appear on your Kindle or app.

Returning books

Log in to your Amazon account and click on Manage My Kindle. You will see your Kindle library. Click on the Actions... menu to the right of the title you want to return:

Click on Return Book:

Confirm that you want to return the Kindle book:

You will receive a confirmation email from Amazon telling you the book has been returned. Once you get that email, you will see the book has also been removed from your Library2Go account. This is not always instant - it can take up to half an hour to get the email.

Common problems

If you are using the Kindle app for a mobile device, it is best to check out and get the book for your Kindle on a computer, then sync the app on your mobile device with your Amazon account. We have found that lending doesn't work right or doesn't work at all if you try to check out the book using the browser on your mobile device.

To deliver the Library2Go book to your Kindle device, you'll need to sync it using a wi-fi connection, not the 3G connection. If you do not have access to wi-fi, you can transfer the book to your Kindle using a USB connection. See the Amazon help page for details.

If you do not see your Kindle book on your Kindle or Kindle app, try restarting the device. The bookshould then appear on your device.
