In this workshop, students will create a colorful glass mosaic to hang on your wall or outside on the side of your house. Broken mosaic pieces will be attached to either a wood or cement backing, depending on location of installation. All your questions and concerns for the right tools and techniques can be answered by taking this class. All materials are provided in the class fee. Local artist Mark Brody teaches the class. Check out his "Diving into a Book" Mosaic that is hanging in the library. Mark won a national award for this piece!

Beginning Embroidery Workshop with artist Jodie Cord
Multi-talented craft artist Jodie Cord will teach us the intricacies of beginning embroidery. Embroidery is a simple inexpensive way to embellish and personalize clothing and accessories, make toys, art, and wall hangings. In this class you will learn all the basic stitches you need to get started: the back stitch, the split stitch, the french knot and the blanket stitch. It is a great craft for anybody able to use a sharp needle. All the necessary supplies will be provided. Each student will have the opportunity to make a stitch sampler an a small felt book.

Poetry writing class with local, award-winning poet Marie Buckley.
Poetry really is for everyone! The best poems are those that touch our hearts, our personal experiences and our senses. Poetry can tell a story, express unspoken feelings, and make us laugh or make us cry. Sometimes poems do all of the aforementioned. Come and explore creativity through poetry! We'll look at a few short examples of interesting poems. Then we'll try writing some poetry using entertaining prompts and models. You'll get ideas to keep practicing and may be happily surprised to find the creative poet within yourself. Bring paper, pen or pencil, and your enthusiasm.

Learn cake decorating techniques from Venis Taherizadegan, Chef at Alchemy on Main in downtown Hillsboro. In this class, people will learn:
*2-3 simple decorating techniques they could do at home.
*how to fill & crumb coat a cake.
*how to ice a cake.
*how to do a basic border.
*how to color, roll & cut fondant shapes.
At the end, everyone will be invited to share the cake! Coffee and tea will also be served.

Evening Book Discussion Group - "Read the Classics" Series : Things Fall Apart
The three-part "Read the Classics" book group series continues this month with Chinua Achebe's novel
Things Fall Apart. First published in 1958, the novel centers on Okonkwo, a "strong man" of an Ibo village in Nigeria and his tribal world. Cultures clash when European missionaries arrive near the end of the 18th century.
Things Fall Apart illustrates the ensuing consequences for a culture, a nation and for Okonkwo. This was the first African novel written in English to receive worldwide praise.

Meet Author Jim Lynch—Border Songs
Award winning author Jim Lynch will speak about his latest novel,
Border Songs, at the Library. Set in Washington State on the Canadian border, the novel features a cast of quirky characters, centering on 23-year-old Brandon Vanderkool. Six foot eight and severely dyslexic, Brandon has always had an unusual perspective, which comes in handy when his father pushes him off their dairy farm and into the Border Patrol. Uncomfortable in this uniformed role, he indulges his passion for bird-watching and often finds not only an astonishing variety of species but also a great many smugglers hauling pot into Washington State, as well as potentially more dangerous illegal activity.
The novel has earned the Washington writer favorable reviews in Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Review, and Library Journal, which says of Lynch's book: "playing on our current fears, he shows us that the divides among people aren't good, then offers a tenderly convincing ending that's not sentimental." Teen Computer Music Programming
Learn the art of making music with a computer! Turn any computer into a drum machine, synthesizer and sampler using a QWERTY keyboard, mouse or game controllers to create a live electronic music performance. You will be introduced to how to design and program your own computer music intrument and sculpt your own original sounds using free open source software (PureData) for Macs or PCs. We will be using the library laptops for the workshop, but bring your favorite storage device to save your creation.

World Music Concert Series @ the Library: Son Cubano
Son Cubano, a duo of Cuban-born musicians Virginia Lopez and Ivan Alamo, will perform traditional songs of Cuba as the World Music Summer Concert Series continues. The Cuban Son is one of the most important forms of Caribbean music of the 20th century and represents a fusion of African and Hispanic cultural influences. Its most characteristic instruments are the Cuban guitar, known as the tres, and the double-headed bongo drum. Also typical are the claves and the Spanish guitar. Son is to Cuba what the tango is to Argentina, or the samba to Brazil.

Table-top Printmaking
Learn two printmaking techniques that require very little equipment. With reduction lino-cut, you will learn to cut a many-color print with the same block. Pochoir is a Japanese stenciling technique that produces marvelous luminescent images. You don't have to be a good at drawing to make awesome prints!
